So, when one of my very good friends asks me to make a Tardis cake for her little boys 5th Birthday, and jokes that she wants it life size – well I just had to take that as a challenge! Not quite life size,but this 6″ square and 12″ high cake, with eight layers of sponge, was quite an impressive size!

I began by doing some research by looking at images of the ‘real’ Tardis and images of other peoples cake versions. What became obvious was that the cakes with the neatest, straightest lines were the best looking ones. Also,the hand painted versions instantly stood out as being in a league of their own! So, after discussions with my trusty right hand man (aka Hubs), we decided to create the side panels in advance, leaving time for them to dry thoroughly before sticking them to the buttercream coated cake. We also used white fondant so that it could be hand painted once constructed. Hubs was put in charge of creating the side panels, and actually constructing the cake. I did the baking and all the hand-painting and finishing touches-another team effort!

I think we both enjoyed creating this (despite the lack of flowers and cute animals!) and we were lucky enough to be at the party of the Birthday Boy and see how well received it was! We soaked up the compliments from everyone and it’s a miracle our heads fit through the door afterwards, lol!

I was absolutely delighted when I received a request for a Tinkerbell cake – I so love doing the girly cakes! I had a few ideas in my head of how I wanted the cake to look, but when I started browsing the Internet for further inspiration, there was one particular cake that kept cropping up on various websites and I instantly fell in love with it.

I must admit, having browsed most of Lyuba’s albums, I think I may have a bit of a cake crush, lol! Her work is inspiring and I hope to be able to create stunning cakes like hers in the future. As you can see, this particular cake was almost entirely inspired by Lyuba’s design, but I do feel mine is nowhere near as refined and polished. But then, I’m pleased with the outcome considering I’ve only been at this for six months!

My piping work is still very rough and this is where I feel I could do with some professional training. I’m considering enrolling on a sugarcraft course next year, but in the mean time I will keep practicing!

I’ve just finished four different orders, two of which had a sports theme.

The first was for a mans 65th birthday, with a Harlequin Rugby team theme.

The other was a mans 40th birthday, who is a real sports fan. His wife requested balls (of the golf, cricket and rugby variety) to go with his sports day birthday party

One of my regular customers (and in fact, my first ever proper customer) contacted me and said that she’d asked her daughter on 5 different occasions what sort of cake she’d like for her 5th Birthday and she was adamant that she wanted a Repunzel/Tangled cake! Well, after browsing the Internet for some examples, we decided this was a fab opportunity to test our caking skills here at Forest Cupcakes. It was obvious that this cake HAD to have a tower, and my Husband decided that he was up for the challenge and took on responsibility for this. This left me with the task of the cake itself, and I felt that we really needed to have a two-tiered cake for that added wow factor! The cake was to feed 35, so it was never going to be a small cake anyway! We opted to purchase a toy Repunzel, as this would give the birthday girl a toy to keep and we could focus our time and energy on the cake and tower.

I wont go into details here as my Husband kindly photographed the process of making the tower. We’ve uploaded these to an album and I hope they are of use to some of you who may be tasked with this cake in future!

This was a slightly unusual cake order – not because of the cakes themselves, but because of the circumstances! I was approached by Dre (the Groom), asking if I could provide cupcakes for his wedding. He explained that he was in the midst of arranging a surprise wedding for his long term girlfriend, Kara, who would know nothing about it!! What a brave man! Anyway, his plan was to propose to Kara two weeks before the wedding date, whisk her off to the registry office the next day to sign the notice of intent which would then give them 12 months to organise the wedding. Little would she know that the actual wedding would go ahead exactly two weeks later!!! Everything went well, except Kara found out about the date of the wedding and the venue, but everything else was kept as a complete surprise for her!

As for the cakes, Dre asked for cupcakes and a top tier cake to fit with their wedding colours of ‘merlot red and paper bag brown’. Dre chose the cupcake wrappers and the silhouette Bride and Groom topper (which I LOVE!) and opted for a mix of chocolate mud cupcakes with white chocolate buttercream & vanilla cupcakes with strawberry buttercream. The top tier cake was chocolate mud cake with chocolate buttercream. I found some embellishments to stick on the simple cupcake wrappers and went with a hearts and roses theme for the cupcake toppers.

The wedding went really well, despite the horrible wet weather, and both the Bride and the Groom loved their cakes……I love happy endings
